President Donald Trump publicly attacked his own U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia on Saturday morning, hours after her office admitted in a court filing that the damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was caused by the administration’s own rushed renovation and not by a vandal.

“I disagree 100% with Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, on the Reflecting Pool,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “I don’t know what she was thinking?”

The post capped a six-week collapse of one of the administration’s loudest law-and-order stories, and it exposed something the White House has spent all summer trying to avoid admitting: the renovation Trump ordered, paid for with millions in public money, failed on its own.

How it started

Trump announced the project in April as part of a broader effort to spruce up the National Mall before the country’s 250th birthday. He wanted the bottom of the pool resurfaced in a shade he called American flag blue, and he told reporters the work would take about a week and cost roughly $1.8 million.

The actual contracts told a different story. Federal procurement records showed the government committed more than $14 million to the effort, including a contract to Virginia-based Atlantic Industrial Coatings to repaint and waterproof the pool floor. The work was awarded without competitive bidding on the grounds that it needed to be done immediately and that the company is led by a Trump donor.

Trump declared the project finished in early June. Within days, the water turned green with algae and sheets of the new blue coating began peeling off the bottom and floating in the pool.

How the blame shifted

Rather than acknowledge a failed installation, the administration reached for sabotage.

Trump told reporters in June that people had been caught damaging the pool with a box cutter and had thrown fertilizer into the water. The White House condemned what it called targeted sabotage as repairs slipped past the July 4 celebration. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said the same contractor would handle the new round of repairs without seeking bids because, in his words, the company did a fantastic job.

At least seven people were arrested or cited in connection with alleged damage to the pool.

The highest profile target was David Hearn, a 67-year-old three-time Olympic canoeist from Bethesda, Maryland. Hearn stopped at the pool during a long bike ride on June 19. He says he reached into the water, touched a piece of coating that was already peeling, and let go when a park employee told him to stop.

Pirro’s office charged him with felony destruction of property. At a July 2 news conference announcing the indictment, she said prosecutors would prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Hearn willfully destroyed property, described him as forcefully and violently ripping up the liner, and noted he faced up to 10 years in prison. Asked whether she was charging harshly at the president’s direction, she said she charges according to the evidence.

Hearn pleaded not guilty on July 9 and was released on his own recognizance.

How it fell apart

Pirro’s own account of the reversal is remarkable.

According to her filing, she visited the drained pool herself on July 17 and became aware of significant damage across the entire basin, not just the small patch Hearn was accused of touching. Her office then demanded records from the Interior Department about how the pool had been lined, and received 695 megabytes of documents in return.

Those records described repeated lining failures during installation, extensive peeling throughout the pool, and a scramble to finish before the holiday. A National Park Service engineer had observed the new lining peeling within two days of the final inspection on June 11, attributing the damage to overspraying and delamination.

“The rush to complete the project led to hasty and botched work that was not remediated before the project was finished and the fencing removed,” Pirro wrote.

She was blunter still about who misled whom, writing that the damage resulted from a botched installation and not vandalism, as the Interior Department had initially represented. Her conclusion: given the newly discovered information, it is difficult to attribute the widespread damage to vandalism at all, let alone prove it beyond a reasonable doubt.

Hearn’s attorneys called the prosecution an abuse of government power and said the administration owes their client an apology.

How Trump responded

Not with an apology. With an attack on the prosecutor who blinked.

“To me, it was a pure case of VANDALISM, that included the grass, which had a big 86 47 emblazoned in giant letters on it, and other elements of the surrounding area,” Trump wrote in his Truth Social post.

Buried in the same paragraph was a concession he almost never makes. “There may have been some contractor difficulty,” Trump allowed, “but the major damage was caused by VANDALS!”

That is the whole story in one sentence. Faced with a filing from his own Justice Department that blames his own rushed project, the president gave up the smallest possible piece of ground and kept insisting on the version that lets him off the hook.

Three other people are still facing misdemeanor charges tied to the pool. Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon has been pressing for answers about the cost of a renovation that peeled apart within weeks. Hearn is due back in court on August 5.

This is what accountability journalism is for. There is a version of this story in which a president is briefed on a coordinated cyberattack against American drinking water, expresses concern, and directs his agencies to find out who did it. That is not the version we got.

At a Cabinet meeting at Camp David on Friday, Donald Trump was asked about the attack that hit more than 30 community water systems across Minnesota. He did not describe it as an attack on Minnesota. He described Minnesota as the perpetrator.

“You know who’s behind it? Minnesota. Because they’re grossly incompetent. I think the governor’s behind it. I don’t think there was an Iranian cyberattack,” he said.

Read that again, because the distinction matters and it will get flattened in most coverage. Accusing a state of failing to defend itself is an ordinary political attack. Accusing a sitting governor of carrying out a cyberattack on his own state’s water supply is an accusation of a serious federal crime, made from the podium, by the president, against a political opponent, with nothing behind it. He went on to call Walz corrupt and to say Minnesota is one of the worst-run states in the country. He offered no evidence, no alternative theory, and no explanation for why the agencies he oversees are saying the opposite of what he is saying.

What actually happened

Hackers hit more than 30 Minnesota community water systems on the night of Sunday, July 26 and the morning of Monday, July 27. Minnesota IT Services described it as one of the largest attacks on local water infrastructure in the state’s history.

The attackers targeted operational technology, the category of equipment that performs physical work. Specifically, they targeted internet-facing programmable logic controllers, the devices that tell pumps, valves, wells, and treatment equipment what to do. In its public service announcement issued Thursday, the FBI identified the targeted hardware as Rockwell Automation and Allen-Bradley MicroLogix 1100 and 1400 series controllers. Once inside, the actors changed IP addresses and passwords, locking utility operators out of monitoring and control of their own systems.

This is the part that separates a water utility hack from a data breach. When the compromised computer controls a valve, the consequences are left with the computer. A memo distributed by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, obtained by CNN, assessed that the attackers’ likely goal was to cause loss of system pressure and, through that, potential contamination of the water supply. The FBI’s own announcement makes the same point in plainer terms: pressure loss in a water system can allow untreated groundwater to seep into pipes.

Nobody in Minnesota got sick, and utility operators switched to manual control as the state activated its cybersecurity incident response, and state and federal teams spent the week helping utilities contain and remediate the damage. One community asked residents to conserve water for a couple of hours while crews figured out what was wrong. Minnesota health officials have reported no compromise of any municipal water supply.

It was not just Minnesota

The FBI and EPA announcement states that water and wastewater utilities in at least seven states have reported incidents since July 27, and that some of that activity degraded water operations. The announcement does not name the states. It does describe the effects: loss of pressure, flooding, operators locked out of their equipment, and utilities forced to run portions of their systems by hand. Some utilities issued boil-water notices. CISA said separately that it is seeing a significant increase in actors targeting these controllers in the water sector.

Wisconsin is the second state to surface publicly. Officials there detected malicious activity at water facilities on Monday and circulated a Department of Natural Resources memo, also obtained by CNN, urging utilities to take immediate action to prevent serious impacts to their systems.

Wisconsin also has a Democratic governor. Wisconsin is also a state Trump carried in 2024, with an open race for that governor’s seat on the ballot in November. The president has not said one word about Wisconsin.

The warnings came first

The most damning fact here is not that Trump lacks evidence. It is that his own government produced the evidence pointing the other way, and did it before the attack happened.

On April 7, the FBI, CISA, NSA, EPA, Department of Energy and US Cyber Command published a joint cybersecurity advisory, AA26-097A, warning that Iranian-affiliated actors were exploiting internet-facing operational technology across US critical infrastructure. The agencies updated it on July 22, four days before the Minnesota attack, to expand the range of affected manufacturers and add fresh indicators of compromise.

The advisory d states that since at least March, the authoring agencies identified an Iranian-affiliated group disrupting the function of PLCs across the Government Services, Water and Wastewater, and Energy sectors, with some victims suffering operational disruption and financial loss.

It describes attackers modifying the logic inside these devices and notes that, in observed cases, the changes disabled critical shutdown and alarm functions, allowing systems to enter unsafe conditions without alerting the operators monitoring them.

That is a document produced by six federal agencies under this president, describing this attack, four days early.

Federal and state investigators are now treating Iran as a leading suspect. Officials told the New York Times, which first reported the possible connection, that the tradecraft used and the complete absence of any ransom demand pointed toward Iranian involvement. Iran’s interest in American water infrastructure is not new. The Justice Department charged Iranian hackers in 2016 over an intrusion at a small dam outside New York City, and Iranian-linked groups have hit US water utilities repeatedly since.

It’s important to note that no formal attribution has been made,, and oofficials have been careful to call the assessment preliminary, while some are actively examining whether a different actor staged the intrusion to appear Iranian.

That caution is appropriate, and it’s also the exact opposite of what the president did. He did not withhold judgment pending forensics. He reached a conclusion instantly, and the conclusion was that the Democratic governor of a state he has lost twice attacked his own constituents’ water.

Why this is worse than a bad soundbite

It is tempting to file this under the usual heading of Trump saying something absurd and moving on. That undersells the damage, for three reasons.

First, it is a message to adversaries. If a foreign state probes American critical infrastructure and the American president’s public response is to blame the victims and deny the attack occurred, the deterrent value of the entire federal cybersecurity apparatus drops. There is no cost imposed on an actor whose intrusion the president refuses to acknowledge.

Second, it punishes disclosure. Minnesota did the right thing. State officials went public quickly, briefed the press, coordinated with federal partners, and shared threat intelligence with other states. The reward was the president of the United States calling them incompetent and criminal on national television. Every state emergency manager watching that exchange now understands that transparency carries a political cost. The next state may take longer to say anything.

Third, it is a substitute for a response. Water systems in this country are exposed for structural reasons. The sector is made up of thousands of small, underfunded utilities running aging equipment, many with no dedicated IT staff at all, and federal auditors have found for years that a large share of the systems they inspect fall short of basic cybersecurity requirements. That is a solvable problem, and solving it requires money, standards, and sustained federal attention. None of that gets discussed in a Cabinet meeting spent on a grudge.

Somebody reached into the machinery that treats American drinking water and tried to break it. The president of the United States watched it happen and went looking for a Democrat to blame.

The Federal Communications Commission added foreign-produced advanced robotic devices to its national security blacklist on July 28, and the agency has since confirmed that the rule does not stop at the humanoid robots and robot dogs that dominated the coverage. It also covers the robot vacuum sitting on your living room floor.

The list in question is the FCC’s Covered List, maintained under the Secure and Trusted Communications Networks Act. Equipment that lands on it cannot receive FCC equipment authorization, and most electronic devices need that authorization before they can legally be imported, marketed, or sold in the United States. Huawei and ZTE gear was added to the same list years ago. Now robots are on it, along with internet-connected power inverters, the hardware that ties solar panels, batteries, and data center equipment into the electrical grid.

The definition the FCC is working from is broad. It captures software-controlled robots that travel over the ground, weigh more than 4.4 pounds including any dock, can perceive their surroundings, and connect wirelessly. An FCC spokesperson confirmed that robot vacuums fall inside that definition, and so do robot lawn mowers, sidewalk delivery robots, and the machines that move packages around warehouses.

What actually changes for households

Nothing you already own is affected. Models that have already cleared FCC authorization stay legal to import, sell, and operate. There is no recall and no forced retirement.

The restriction hits everything that comes next. And in this particular market, that is nearly everything. The five largest robot vacuum brands in the world, Roborock, Ecovacs, Dreame, Xiaomi, and Narwal, are all Chinese companies. The Roomba brand is now owned by a Chinese firm called Picea, which acquired it after iRobot filed for bankruptcy. Even Dyson depends on Chinese manufacturing for its own robot vacuums.

Domestic assembly is not an automatic escape hatch either. Matic, a company that assembles its robot vacuums in California, said it may still need to apply for a waiver because it does not currently source at least 65% of its components from American suppliers.

The waiver is the point

Manufacturers frozen out by the rule are not without options. They can seek what the FCC calls conditional approval, which requires a favorable national security determination from the Department of War for robots and from either the Department of War or the Department of Homeland Security for inverters. Getting one, according to reporting on the process, generally means demonstrating domestic manufacturing or committing to invest in it.

That is the structure worth paying attention to. A federal agency has made an entire product category illegal to bring to market, and then created a discretionary exemption that companies can win by pledging investment on terms this administration approves. It is the same pattern visible across the administration’s trade and technology policy, where access to the American market has been converted into something firms negotiate for individually rather than something they qualify for under a published standard.

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr welcomed the executive branch determinations in a statement announcing the additions.

The security concerns are real, which is exactly why the politics matter

There is a genuine need to ensure devices are properly being handled; we don’t deny that. The administration’s determination cites specific incidents, including a 2026 vulnerability that exposed thousands of home robots worldwide to remote access covering live camera feeds, microphone audio, and detailed floor plans of people’s houses.

Researchers found what appeared to be a preinstalled backdoor in Chinese robot dogs in April 2025. A separate flaw in certain humanoid robots could have allowed them to be commandeered and used to scan for other nearby machines.

Security professionals and allied governments have also flagged power inverters as a mounting risk to electrical grids, and France and Lithuania have both restricted Chinese components on similar grounds.

Those are legitimate findings, but they also don’t explain why the remedy was designed the way it was. A rule aimed at insecure devices would set security requirements that any manufacturer could meet simply by working towards building safer products. This rule instead sets a country-of-origin test and then sells relief from it in exchange for capital commitments. The security case supplies the justification. The waiver process supplies the leverage.

For now, the biggest risk for Americans is that buying a robot vacuum next year will mean a thinner market and higher prices, and the same dynamic applies to the inverter rule right at a moment when households and utilities are trying to bring solar capacity online. The administration is describing that outcome as reshoring. For the people paying for it, it looks like another product category getting more expensive by federal decision.

The timing carries its own weight. The measures arrive ahead of a planned September meeting between Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, giving the administration fresh leverage to trade in a category that, unsurprisingly, China accounts for roughly 85% of global humanoid robot production.

Representative Max Miller of Ohio has abandoned the domestic violence case he filed against his ex-wife, and the judge’s reasoning is far more damaging to him than anything he had accused her of doing.

A Cuyahoga County judge formally dismissed the case against Emily Moreno, the daughter of Senator Bernie Moreno, on Wednesday after Miller moved to drop it back in May.

Domestic Relations Court Judge Debra Boros found that Miller had not been harmed and had shown no sign of fearing his former wife. The ruling noted that Miller was under no apparent infirmity and did not appear threatened, according to the court document obtained by reporters.

Miller had told the court that doorbell camera footage from a February 2025 custody exchange backed up his account of events. His own legal team later informed Moreno’s attorneys that the footage does not exist.

The allegations against Miller

Moreno’s accusations describe a pattern of violence. She says Miller threw hot water from a skillet onto her chest and stomach, causing scalding burns. She says he held a gun to her head. She says he pushed her into a wall. She says their two year old daughter suffered a fractured collarbone. Miller has denied every allegation.

At a July 28 hearing, Miller’s own attorney, Larry Zuckerman, acknowledged that his client “just can’t control himself,” according to an affidavit Moreno filed Wednesday.

That same day, Moreno filed for a restraining order to keep Miller away from her legal team after he physically touched her lawyer Andrew Zashin without consent. In her affidavit, Moreno wrote that she stepped in and told Miller to get his hands off him.

Calls for resignation

The renewed attention has produced a wave of condemnation. The gun violence prevention organization founded by former Representative Gabrielle Giffords demanded Miller’s resignation Wednesday, with executive director Emma Brown saying that Congress is no place for violent abusers and that the House should expel him if he refuses to step down.

The Democratic Women’s Caucus called the reports deeply disturbing and asked the House Ethics Committee to open an investigation, in a joint statement from Chair Teresa Leger Fernández of New Mexico and Vice Chairs Emilia Sykes of Ohio and Hillary Scholten of Michigan.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, speaking at the Ohio State Fair, called the accusations troubling but said the decision belongs to voters. Representative Shontel Brown of Ohio pointed out that members of her own party have resigned over far less.

A pattern that predates the marriage

Former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham has also accused Miller of physically abusing her during their relationship in 2019 and 2020. Miller sued her for defamation, then dropped the suit and settled on terms requiring both parties to sign a nondisclosure agreement barring them from discussing the matter publicly.

Grisham is now suing Miller, arguing that he violated that agreement when he publicly denied her accusations.

Trump endorsed him anyway

President Trump gave Miller his “Complete and Total Endorsement” earlier this year, with the abuse allegations already public and already hanging over the congressman. Trump’s own political operation is reportedly alarmed in private about the seat, viewing Miller’s collapse as entirely self inflicted.

That alarm is showing up in the numbers. Democratic challenger Brian Poindexter, a union ironworker, led Miller by 17 points among independent voters in a June 2026 survey conducted by the Democratic firm GBAO. Trump carried the district by 11 points in 2024.

The Trump administration announced Tuesday that it will end the Part D Premium Stabilization Demonstration after this year, removing the federal support that has kept prescription drug premiums from spiking for roughly 25 million seniors and people with disabilities enrolled in standalone Medicare drug plans.

The decision was disclosed in a routine CMS bid announcement rather than a press conference, and the agency’s justification was that its analysis of insurer bids showed plan sponsors now have enough experience under the redesigned drug benefit to price their own products without help. When the program was created in 2024, CMS said it could run for at least three years. It is ending after two.

Beneficiaries will not learn what they actually owe until September, when the agency publishes final plan offerings and premiums. Open enrollment begins October 15. The midterm elections follow in November.

What the program was doing

The Inflation Reduction Act capped what seniors pay out of pocket for prescriptions, set at $2,100 in 2026, and paid for that protection by shifting cost onto the private insurers who run Part D. Insurer liability in the catastrophic phase of coverage tripled, rising from 20 percent to 60 percent. Seniors got a hard ceiling on their drug spending. Insurers got a much larger bill, and the only place they can recover it is the monthly premium.

The Government Accountability Office found that without intervention, the average monthly premium for standalone plan enrollees not receiving low-income assistance would have climbed from roughly $43 to $81 in a single year. Nearly 4 million people, about 30 percent of that group, were on track for increases between $40 and $100 a month, and about 1 million faced increases above $100.

That did not happen. The demonstration cut premiums by up to $15 per member and capped year-over-year plan increases, and average standalone premiums instead went from about $42 in 2024 to $43 in 2025. KFF calculated that the subsidies reduced average monthly premiums by roughly $26 in 2025 and $16 in 2026. The program cost $9.8 billion across both years.

The administration’s own numbers contradict its own spin

CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz posted on X that the agency is “stabilizing the market so this bailout is no longer needed,” and told the public that premiums would rise less than $10 for most recipients with many seeing lower costs.

Administration officials gave a very different set of projections to the Wall Street Journal. About 25 percent of enrollees are expected to see flat or lower premiums. Roughly 30 percent face increases under $10. The remaining 45 percent are projected to see increases of $11 to $20 per month, which amounts to $132 to $240 per year for people who frequently live on fixed incomes.

Oz’s framing of the program as an insurance industry bailout deserves scrutiny on its own terms. The money did go to insurers because, by design, every dollar in Medicare Part D goes to insurers. But GAO found that approximately 97 percent of the 2025 spending was directed at reducing the premium charged to beneficiaries, with about 3 percent providing additional financial protection to the companies. Ending it does not remove insurers from the transaction. It changes who pays them, from the federal government to a retiree on Social Security.

There is a legitimate criticism buried in the administration’s position, and it is worth stating plainly: officials told the Journal that more than half of the 2027 funding would have flowed to UnitedHealth Group alone. Concentrating billions in subsidies into a single conglomerate is a real problem. It is not a problem this decision solves. It simply moves the cost onto patients while leaving the market structure that produced that concentration entirely intact.

Part D is the second bill, not the first

For context on what this lands on top of, Medicare Part B is projected to cost about $209.50 per month in 2027, roughly $2,500 a year, and it covers doctor visits and outpatient care rather than prescriptions. Drug coverage requires a separate purchase. The 2027 base beneficiary premium for Part D is set at $41.33, though what any individual pays depends on their specific plan, and the number of standalone plan options has already contracted sharply from 464 nationwide in 2025 to 360 in 2026.

The reason any of this is necessary

Americans pay 2.78 times what 33 other wealthy nations pay for the same prescription drugs, according to research RAND conducted for the Department of Health and Human Services. For brand-name drugs, the figure is at least 3.22 times higher even after accounting for the rebates manufacturers pay, and brand-name products account for only 7 percent of American prescription volume while consuming 87 percent of American drug spending.

Total health spending in the United States reached an estimated $14,885 per person in 2024, against an average of $7,371 across comparable wealthy countries.

That gap is not an accident of the free market. It is written into federal statute.

When Republicans under George W. Bush created Part D through the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003, they included a provision known as the noninterference clause. It bars the Secretary of Health and Human Services from negotiating drug prices with manufacturers, and it separately bars the Secretary from requiring a particular formulary or setting a reimbursement price structure. The second prohibition matters as much as the first, because the ability to exclude a drug from coverage is the leverage that makes any negotiation credible. Congress removed both tools at once.

Medicare accounts for roughly 32 percent of all retail prescription drug spending in the country. The Department of Veterans Affairs negotiates prices and runs a national formulary. Medicaid receives mandatory manufacturer rebates.

Medicare, by an enormous margin the largest purchaser of the three, is the single program that was walled off. The Inflation Reduction Act finally amended the clause to permit negotiation on a limited set of high-spending drugs, phasing up to 20 per year.

Republicans in Congress objected to the stabilization program from the start. In August 2024, three GOP committee leaders asked GAO to review its legality, arguing it lacked a clear statutory basis. They have not, in the intervening two years, proposed repealing the noninterference clause that made the subsidy necessary.

What comes next

CMS will publish the 2027 landscape and final average premiums in mid-to-late September, and Medicare plans mail Annual Notice of Change documents to enrollees in the fall. Open enrollment runs October 15 through December 7, and it is the window during which beneficiaries can switch plans if their premiums increase.

This arrives after the administration allowed enhanced ACA subsidies to expire, and while employer family coverage has climbed to nearly $27,000 a year. The pattern is consistent. Federal support is withdrawn, underlying prices remain unchanged, and the difference falls on households.

Seniors did not create this pricing structure and cannot negotiate their way out of it. They were handed a system in 2003 that forbade their government from bargaining on their behalf, and on Tuesday they were told the workaround is being canceled too.

On the morning of January 22, a man being held by ICE inside an Indiana state prison waited for his medication, and nobody came.

He has epilepsy. He had been prescribed Keppra since 2020, two 1,000 milligram doses a day, and missing even one dose can trigger a seizure. He had gone nearly a year without one.

That morning there was no medical staff on duty in his building to hand out the breakfast doses. Hours later he seized, hit his head, and when officers finally reached his cell they found him lying in a pool of his own blood.

A hospital glued the wound on his head shut and sent him back to the prison the same day.

Here is where it turns from negligence into something uglier. Shortly after he returned, officers told him he was being moved to a different unit. He was still coming out of the seizure, still injured, having trouble standing. He asked why.

According to the complaint, he never threatened anyone, never resisted, and never left his cell. Officers opened the port in the cell door and sprayed him in the eyes. He was blinded, burning, struggling to breathe. Before he could rinse any of it off, they cuffed him and hauled him out.

They never gave him a shower. He tried to wash the chemical off in a sink.

The ACLU of Indiana filed two federal lawsuits on his behalf this week, one against the private company paid to provide medical care at the facility and one against the officers. Ken Falk, the group’s legal director, called what happened cruel and unconstitutional.

I want to be clear about why this is a constitutional question and not just a decency question.

This man was not serving a sentence. He was a civil immigration detainee. His asylum status, granted in 2000, was revoked in 2022 after a fraud conviction, and that is the entire hand the administration has to play here.

Civil detention is legally not punishment. It exists to make sure somebody appears at a hearing. That is the exact premise the government uses to justify holding tens of thousands of people, and it comes with an obligation to provide adequate medical care. He was released in May after winning a habeas petition.

This was the second time medication went missing at that prison, and the first time somebody died

Indiana signed a two-year agreement with DHS in August 2025 to hold up to 1,000 ICE detainees at that facility. The state collects $294 per detainee per day. The first detainees arrived in October.

By February, one of them was dead.

Lorth Sim was 59, a Cambodian national who came to this country as a refugee in 1983 and became a lawful permanent resident three years later. He had Type 2 diabetes and had been prescribed metformin.

The county coroner ruled he died of cardiovascular disease with diabetes as a contributing cause. But a former nurse for the prison’s medical contractor told the Indianapolis Star that Sim never actually received the metformin, and an independent autopsy his family paid for found significant glucose in his blood.

Six weeks later, 55-year-old Tuan Van Bui died at the same facility. Two detainees who watched him collapse said help arrived too late.

When Congressman André Carson toured the prison in April, detainees told him a man had been screaming for help and staff assumed he was joking.

The same failure, over and over, in state after state

If Indiana were the only place this happened, it would be a scandal about one prison. It is not.

Human Rights Watch and Physicians for Human Rights published a joint investigation in June that walks through case after case with the same shape. Somebody says they are sick. Nobody takes it seriously. Then it is too late.

A 44-year-old Ukrainian man at the Krome facility in Florida repeatedly reported chest pain and an irregular heartbeat, and there is no record anyone prescribed him anything. When a nurse found him unresponsive with pupils that would not react to light, staff did not call 911. Workers at the facility chose to move him to the clinic and ordered non-emergency transport. He reached an emergency room four and a half hours after the first call, with a blood pressure over 280. The working theory among the staff was that he was high.

A 39-year-old Mexican man who was being held at Adelanto in California reported a fever, a cough, and a growing abscess. A provider gave him ointment and a fiber supplement and sent him on his way. No physical exam was ever documented, which is what would have found the infection. He died of septic shock. He had lived here since he was four and worked at the same car wash for 15 years.

A 42-year-old Honduran man at a county jail in New York was identified at intake as being in active alcohol withdrawal, a condition that kills people when it goes unmanaged and almost never does when it does not. He was cleared for detention within two hours. Nobody checked on him for the next 17 hours. A guard found him dead.

A 45-year-old Ethiopian man at Eloy in Arizona went to medical four separate times over six weeks and was treated for a pulled muscle every time. He had lost 20% of his body weight before anyone looked harder. He had tuberculosis, plus untreated HIV that had progressed to AIDS. He had been in general population that entire time with an active airborne infection.

Not one of those is a story about a rare disease. Every one is a story about somebody saying they were sick and being waved off.

The numbers are not close to normal

In the first 500 days of this administration, 52 people died in ICE custody. Thirty-nine people died in the first year alone, the highest annual toll since ICE was created in 2003.

The mortality rate is the highest in nearly two decades. It is roughly four times the rate under the previous administration. It is higher than it was at the peak of COVID, when detention was a documented public health disaster.

And this is not simply a function of holding more people. The detained population grew 77%. Annual deaths more than tripled.

For comparison, the average was 8.9 deaths a year between 2018 and 2024. ICE itself reported 11 deaths in 2024 and 32 deaths in 2025. At least 22 people have died so far in 2026, and we are only in July.

An earlier study of deaths between 2017 and 2021 concluded that 95% of them were preventable or possibly preventable with adequate care.

Three decisions made this happen

They deleted the penalties. The medical contractor in Indiana is Centurion Health, a subsidiary of the insurance giant Centene. It faces more than 150 active federal lawsuits in that state alone over conditions of confinement. Missouri has fined it every quarter since renewing its contract. A whistleblower suit in Delaware, in which the state attorney general joined, accuses it of falsifying records and concealing staffing shortages. When Indiana extended the contract, the state removed the clause requiring the company to pay back for missed staffing requirements, and it was renewed this March again for roughly $213 million despite all of the company’s previous issues.

They stopped paying for outside care. For more than 20 years, the Department of Veterans Affairs processed reimbursements to hospitals, pharmacies, and specialists for treating detainees offsite. ICE paid the VA for the service. On October 3, 2025, under pressure from a right-wing legal group, that arrangement was terminated. ICE handed the work to a private contractor called Acentra Health. In its own procurement documents, ICE called the situation an absolute emergency and specifically named dialysis, prenatal care, and chemotherapy as the care at risk. As of last month, Acentra had collected $44.6 million and paid providers exactly nothing. Not a reduced amount. Zero, for nine months running. Providers have started refusing these patients.

They fired the inspectors. Congress created the Office of the Immigration Detention Ombudsman in 2019 specifically to investigate deaths, medical care, and misconduct inside detention. It was an effective agency that suddenly went from more than 100 at the start of 2025 to five at the start of this year, overseeing 220 active facilities. In May, DHS closed it permanently and blamed Congress. The department’s civil rights office was gutted alongside it, with its budget cut 77% in one year.

What that looks like when nobody is watching

Camp East Montana, the tent facility on the Fort Bliss Army post in El Paso, is now the largest immigration detention site in the country. The facility was quickly opened in August 2025 under a $1.3 billion contract awarded to a company with no prior detention experience.

An ICE inspection in February found 49 violations of detention standards at that facility, including 22 tied to use of force. Inspectors flagged a failure to isolate a detainee showing symptoms of pulmonary tuberculosis and a failure to document suicide prevention checks.

At least three people have died there. One death was ruled a homicide by the El Paso County medical examiner. In that case, federal auditors reported in June that evidence was missing or destroyed.

Human Rights Watch and the ACLU interviewed 71 people held there. Roughly 90% said they had been assaulted by staff or watched somebody else be beaten.

The horrendous treatment of individuals housed in ICE detention centers reaches pregnant women too with DHS data provided to senators showing that the government deported 363 pregnant, postpartum, or nursing women between January 2025 and February 2026. As of February, 86 pregnant women were in custody, nine of them in the third trimester. Sixteen miscarriages were recorded.

ICE’s own standing policy says it generally should not be detaining these women at all.

Their answer is not surprisingly to shift blame and call it fake news

When reporters asked ICE about the deaths in Indiana, a spokesperson said claims of substandard conditions were false and added that this is the best healthcare many of these people have received in their entire lives.

When NPR asked DHS about the record death toll, the agency denied there was a spike, cited a death rate expressed as a percentage, and used the statement to encourage detainees to deport themselves. Being in detention, they said, is a choice.

Read that against the record and it’s a very different situation. A man with epilepsy seizing on a concrete floor because nobody showed up with his pills. A man with a brain bleed loaded into a van instead of an ambulance. A man with a raging infection sent back to his cell with ointment. A man dead of alcohol withdrawal 17 hours into custody. A man carrying active tuberculosis through a housing unit for six weeks.

And understand who is inside these facilities that are being run by unqualified companies and untrained workers. As of April, fewer than 18,000 of the more than 60,000 people in ICE detention had any prior criminal conviction. Roughly 24,000 had neither a conviction nor a pending charge.

None of this is an accident. Every piece of it was a decision somebody signed and decisions were made to fill facilities past capacity with people who have never been convicted of anything. The decision to hire contractors with documented histories of understaffing and then delete the penalty for understaffing. The decision to blow up a working payment system with nothing ready to replace it. The decision to fire the watchdogs.

Those choices have a body count, and it is climbing every week.

President Donald Trump has approved a civilian nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia that could permit the kingdom to enrich uranium domestically without adopting the strict nonproliferation terms the United States has demanded of other partners, according to multiple officials who described the deal before its formal announcement.

The agreement is expected to last 30 years, involve American companies, and be worth tens of billions of dollars.

The move alarms nonproliferation experts because enrichment technology sits at the heart of both civilian reactors and nuclear weapons.

Once a country can spin centrifuges to produce reactor fuel, it possesses much of what it would need to produce weapons-grade material.

What the deal actually does

Under the terms reported by officials, the agreement would see U.S. firms build out the kingdom’s nuclear infrastructure, potentially including an American-built enrichment facility inside Saudi Arabia if a joint study calls for one. Saudi leadership agreed only to limited international inspections, a weaker arrangement than the comprehensive oversight nonproliferation advocates have pushed for.

The deal does not require Saudi Arabia to accept what has long been called the gold standard. That benchmark, established in the 2009 civilian nuclear agreement with the United Arab Emirates, required Abu Dhabi to renounce domestic enrichment and reprocessing entirely. Successive administrations pointed to it as the model for keeping civilian programs from becoming weapons pathways. Trump’s Saudi deal walks away from it.

Why the timing raises the stakes

The agreement lands as the Saudi crown prince has repeatedly warned that his country would pursue a bomb if Iran acquires one. That standing threat turns the enrichment question from a technical detail into a regional flashpoint. Handing Riyadh the capability to enrich, while its de facto ruler openly ties his nuclear intentions to Tehran’s, gives Saudi Arabia a running start toward a weapon should it choose to build one.

Previous negotiations had linked any enrichment concession to Saudi normalization with Israel, but Saudi leaders insisted that could not happen without meaningful progress toward Palestinian statehood. Trump has since separated the nuclear agreement from the normalization push, pursuing the two on parallel tracks rather than as a single bargain.

The Congressional path

The agreement is expected to be submitted to Congress for review, but the structure of that review favors the administration. Lawmakers who object would need a veto-proof majority to actually block it, a threshold that is rarely met. That leaves critics with limited leverage even as they warn of the consequences.

Senator Ed Markey, a longtime nonproliferation voice, warned earlier this year that allowing Saudi enrichment risks transforming the region into what he called a nuclear “Wild West” and igniting a new arms race. With Trump simultaneously escalating tensions with Iran, he cautioned, giving Saudi Arabia enrichment capability could inflame the conflict rather than contain it.

The bottom line

A civilian nuclear program is not, by itself, a weapons program. But the safeguards that keep those two things separate are precisely what this deal loosens. By dropping the enrichment ban, accepting only limited inspections, and doing so for a government that has openly promised to match Iran, the agreement narrows the distance between Saudi Arabia and a bomb. A nuclear arms race in the Middle East is no longer a hypothetical. It is the deal on the table.

President Donald Trump granted the United Arab Emirates sweeping access to advanced American semiconductors and artificial intelligence models over the objections of his own Commerce Department, according to a report published by Politico on Wednesday morning. The report says the move was alarming to the very officials tasked with keeping cutting-edge U.S. technology out of the hands of adversaries.

The reporting, based on accounts from five people with knowledge of the internal deliberations, describes an administration that brushed aside repeated warnings about where those chips might ultimately end up. The decision has drawn sharp scrutiny in part because of a financial entanglement between the Emirates and the president’s family business.

What the Administration Did

On July 10, the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security formally loosened restrictions on sensitive technology exports to the UAE. The bureau exists to secure American technology from adversaries and criminals, and its own staff were reportedly surprised by the announcement.

The move ran directly against recommendations that agency personnel had submitted to senior officials the previous year. Three former officials with knowledge of the reports, along with two other people familiar with the matter, told reporters that Trump had been warned repeatedly before signing off.

The UAE is an allied nation, and its leaders pledged to invest more than $1 trillion in the United States over the coming decade. But its status as an ally did little to quiet concerns inside the agency about the destination of the technology once it left American control.

The Warnings Officials Ignored

Agency staff compiled and circulated multiple internal reports and memos last fall documenting security risks tied to G42, the UAE’s state-backed AI giant, and its affiliated companies.

Those assessments, not previously reported, warned that expanding the companies’ access to U.S. technology, including advanced processors from firms like Nvidia and the powerful AI models built with them, made it more likely the technology would reach American adversaries.

The staff flagged China’s influence inside the Emirates as a particular concern. One person put the risk in blunt terms, describing the UAE as the primary diversion point for sensitive U.S. technologies in the Middle East, and adding that the scale of the problem exceeded other channels by orders of magnitude.

All of it was set aside. The administration declined to answer several questions about the decision, responding instead with statements praising the president’s leadership.

The Crypto Connection

The scrutiny intensified as attention turned to a possible motive. The UAE had purchased a 49 percent stake in the Trump family’s cryptocurrency firm, World Liberty Financial, a transaction that critics say fits a broader pattern of self-dealing during the president’s second term.

Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren connected the dots directly. She said the arrangement reeks of corruption, laying out a sequence in which the UAE quietly bought into the president’s crypto business and then received chips that America’s own security officials had recommended withholding. Her stated fear is that the processors could ultimately reach China and help advance weapons systems that would one day be aimed back at the United States.

The Commerce Department’s security professionals raised that exact scenario months ago. The administration moved forward regardless. It’s corruption at the deepest levels of the U.S. government.

The freeze

The Trump administration announced Tuesday that it is pausing more than $1 billion in Medicaid payments to California and Minnesota, the latest move in a fraud campaign that has repeatedly landed on Democratic-led states.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said the department is holding back $867.5 million from California and $199 million from Minnesota while the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reviews claims it labeled high-risk.

For California, officials pointed to in-home care programs where spending has grown faster than the national average. For Minnesota, CMS flagged 14 service areas it said need more documentation. The administration insists the money is not being cut and can be released once each state shows the claims meet federal standards.

What the administration says

Kennedy framed the freeze as basic stewardship, telling reporters that if the governors want the funding restored, they simply need to provide documentation showing the services are legitimate. CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz said his agency is finished trying to recover misused funds after the fact, describing the deferrals as part of a new approach to program integrity.

Left unmentioned in that tidy story is what the flagged California spending actually pays for. The program driving the growth keeps seniors and people with disabilities out of far more expensive nursing homes, a model that costs taxpayers less, not more. Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office has said the expansion of in-home support saved the state roughly $107,000 per person by reducing nursing home reliance.

A pattern that keeps pointing one direction

This is not the first time the administration has reached for the same lever, and it has reached for it in a conspicuously narrow set of states. Vice President JD Vance, whom Trump put in charge of an anti-fraud task force, announced the deferral of $1.3 billion in Medicaid reimbursements to California in May, after an earlier round of cuts to Minnesota this winter. The task force has concentrated its attention on California, Minnesota, New York and Hawaii, all states run by Democrats.

State officials have named that pattern plainly. Sen. Alex Padilla called the May action against California political retribution, plain and simple, arguing it was about punishing a state that did not vote for Trump.

When the administration first froze Minnesota’s funds in February, Gov. Tim Walz said the move had nothing to do with fraud and described it as a campaign of retribution against blue states. California Attorney General Rob Bonta said his state appeared targeted solely for political reasons and has signaled the state could go to court.

Who actually pays

Medi-Cal, California’s Medicaid program, covers roughly 15 million people, about 38 percent of the state. The residents whose care hangs on these disputed dollars are overwhelmingly low-income seniors, disabled people and families, the same populations Republicans already squeezed with the Medicaid cuts baked into last year’s budget law.

The administration’s framing asks the public to treat a documentation review as proof of theft. But withholding care money first and demanding paperwork later inverts how due process is supposed to work, and it does so on a timeline that happens to run straight into the November midterms, where Republicans have made fraud a favored talking point.

Fraud in public programs is real and worth rooting out. A crackdown that keeps missing every red state, while cutting off home care for seniors in states the president dislikes, is something else.

A dozen Democratic states stop the deal cold

A federal judge has temporarily blocked Paramount Skydance from completing its $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of CNN, handing a coalition of 12 states led by Democratic attorneys general their first major win against a merger that would hand a close ally of President Donald Trump control of one of the networks he attacks most.

U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín of the Northern District of California, a Biden appointee, issued the emergency restraining order barring Paramount from closing the transaction. The order holds for 14 days, and the judge set an August 3 hearing on the states’ request for a longer preliminary injunction that would freeze the deal while the antitrust case proceeds.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta and 11 counterparts argued the tie-up would gut competition in film and television. Bonta wrote in the filing that the combination would mean higher prices, lower quality, and less content for viewers, theaters, and cable distributors across the country. Every one of the states challenging the deal has a Democratic attorney general.

A penalty clock now runs against Paramount

The delay carries a steep price. Under the merger terms, Paramount owes Warner Bros. shareholders an additional 25 cents per share for every quarter the deal drags past September 30, a so-called ticking fee that works out to roughly $650 million each quarter. With the court order in place and a full hearing still weeks away, that clock is now working against the buyer.

Why the court refused to let it close

Judge Martínez-Olguín was not persuaded the deal was lawful. Under antitrust law, a merger that concentrates a market is presumed illegal, which puts the burden on the company to prove the combination is safe rather than on the government to prove it is dangerous.

She found the combined firm would command about 27 percent of the wide-release theatrical film market, with concentration jumping roughly 359 points on the standard industry measure.

The proposed merger, she concluded, was so likely to substantially lessen competition that it had to be enjoined. She added that letting the deal close first would make the harm nearly impossible to undo, invoking the long-standing principle that once the egg is scrambled it cannot be put back together.

A merger greased by favors to Trump

The legal fight cannot be separated from the political one. Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison, whose son David Ellison runs Paramount, is a longtime Trump ally who has poured tens of millions into pro-Trump causes, and Trump has openly demanded new ownership of CNN.

Trump said last December that it was imperative for CNN to be sold, a not-subtle signal of his preference as his own Justice Department reviewed the deal.

That review has drawn accusations of political favoritism. When the DOJ cleared the merger in June without forcing Paramount to sell off a single asset, Senator Elizabeth Warren said the approval reeked of corruption. A press freedom group has since filed its own suit alleging the Ellisons promised illegal, private benefits to Trump in exchange for waving the earlier Paramount-Skydance merger through.

The pattern predates this deal. Paramount agreed to pay Trump $16 million to settle a lawsuit over the editing of a “60 Minutes” interview, a case the company’s own lawyers had called meritless, in the run-up to a merger that needed Trump administration sign-off.

What Ellison has already done to the newsroom

The stakes for CNN are visible in what has happened at CBS since the Ellisons took over. David Ellison installed conservative commentator Bari Weiss atop CBS News, where she has overhauled “60 Minutes” and presided over the exit of veteran journalists.

The company also canceled Stephen Colbert’s top-rated “Late Show,” a decision Colbert himself linked to Paramount’s payment to Trump, calling it bribery. Weiss is widely expected to run CNN as well if the merger survives.

What comes next

Paramount has vowed to fight, calling the states’ suit wrong on the facts and the law and insisting the merger strengthens competition. The company can appeal, and the August 3 hearing will determine whether the freeze becomes a lasting injunction.

For now, the deal that would concentrate two Hollywood studios, two streaming services, and two major news operations under a family aligned with the president is stalled, and the meter is running.

The United States carried out a new wave of airstrikes on Iran on Monday, and Tehran answered by attacking the American allies Kuwait and Bahrain, the latter home to the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet. President Donald Trump said the strikes were done “in honor of” U.S. service members recently killed, casting a widening war as retaliation even as the truce his administration signed last month lay in ruins.

Central Command said its ninth consecutive night of strikes hit Iranian military command centers, air defenses, coastal surveillance sites, missile and drone launch pads, and communications networks. Iran’s state news agency said the bombardment killed at least one person near Tabriz, a northwestern city believed to sit atop underground missile bases run by the Revolutionary Guard.

An escalation of Washington’s making

The fighting is not a spontaneous eruption in a volatile region; it is the outcome of choices made in the Oval Office. The war began on February 28, and the interim deal reached last month, meant to settle the remaining disputes within 60 days, has collapsed after both sides resumed attacks on each other’s infrastructure.

Rather than press the diplomatic advantage, Trump has threatened to bomb Iran’s power stations and bridges to force Tehran to loosen its grip on the Strait of Hormuz, and recent strikes suggest that plan is already underway. The administration has also reimposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports to choke off crude oil exports.

Iran turns its fire on Kuwait and Bahrain

Tehran has repeatedly answered U.S. strikes by targeting American allies across the Gulf. Bahrain sounded its missile sirens Monday morning while Kuwait said its air defenses were firing at an incoming barrage, echoing earlier rounds in which Kuwait reported intercepting dozens of Iranian drones in a single day.

Bahrain’s Foreign Ministry condemned Iranian drone strikes aimed at its air traffic systems, warning they put civilian travelers at risk.

The pattern is now familiar and dangerous. Similar Iranian salvos against Bahrain and Kuwait last month raised fears that the interim agreement could unravel, again placing the Middle East on the edge of a wider war. That breakdown has arrived.

A new front opens over Saudi Arabia

The crisis widened further Monday when Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who are backed by Iran, declared a maritime embargo against Saudi Arabia, a move that opens a new front and threatens global energy supplies well beyond the Gulf.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree, announcing the blockade in a video statement, framed it as an “eye for an eye” response to a recent attack on Sanaa International Airport that the group blamed on Saudi Arabia.

The timing is acute. With the Strait of Hormuz largely stalled, Saudi Arabia has leaned on a pipeline to the Red Sea to move millions of barrels of oil to market, a relief valve the Houthis are now positioned to shut. As a projectile set a vessel ablaze off the coast of Oman early Monday, the Revolutionary Guard claimed it was targeting tankers in the strait.

Rising body counts and rising prices

The human cost keeps climbing. Iranian authorities said Sunday that at least 50 people had been killed and 517 wounded in the latest rounds of American strikes, and 17 U.S. service members have died since the war began in February. The most recent, the military said, was killed in Iraq on Saturday during a controlled detonation of a downed Iranian drone.

Americans far from the front are feeling the war too. Benchmark Brent crude traded above $86 a barrel on Monday, and regular gasoline climbed back to a national average of $4 a gallon, a squeeze on household budgets that lands with unusual political weight as voters head toward the fall midterms.

A narrow opening for diplomacy

Amid the escalation, Pakistan has stepped up efforts to revive the collapsed ceasefire, and two regional officials said Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni was expected in Islamabad late Monday for a two-day visit.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters Sunday that the United States remains open to talks but insisted any negotiation “has to be real,” adding that a genuine opening was “not where we are tonight.”

Mohammad Javad Zarif, a former Iranian foreign minister, argued in an essay published Monday by Foreign Affairs that the interim deal “could never survive such dissonance” over the strait.

“Washington cannot eliminate the Iranian government,” he wrote, contending that only a new peace agreement built by regional states could let the United States turn its attention elsewhere. The alternative, as the administration keeps choosing it, is a ninth night of strikes, a widening arc of retaliation, and a war with no exit in sight.

Attorneys for David Hearn, a 67-year-old three-time Olympian charged with a felony over roughly two square feet of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, have asked a judge to throw the case out after discovering that the physical evidence underlying the indictment is gone. Their motion to dismiss, filed July 16 before Judge Todd Edelman of D.C. Superior Court, includes a sworn declaration stating flatly that the disputed section of liner is missing.

What the government said happened

Hearn was indicted July 2 on a single felony count of destruction of property. Prosecutors allege he pulled up part of the pool’s newly installed liner on June 19.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced the charge at a press conference that same day, telling reporters that National Park Service employees had watched Hearn forcefully and violently pull the bottom liner up with both hands. She emphasized that he had used his bare hands to do it.

The evidence demand, and the draining

On July 8, defense attorneys sent the government a written demand to preserve all physical evidence in the case. The motion asserts that the government fenced off the pool that same day and began draining it again for repairs.

Eight days later, on July 16, the defense team was granted access to the drained pool with the government’s assistance. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Reddington accompanied them and pointed out the precise spot where Hearn allegedly touched the liner.

Hearn’s attorneys write that the government’s failure to preserve the evidence, in the face of an express demand, has destroyed his ability to collect material relevant to his defense. Their conclusion is that dismissal is the only appropriate remedy.

Why this case is bigger than a pool liner

Courts take spoliation seriously precisely because the alternative is unworkable. If a prosecuting authority can charge someone based on physical evidence, receive a formal demand to preserve that evidence, and then allow it to be destroyed while the case is pending, the defendant is left arguing against an accusation he has no way to test.

The scale here makes the dynamic easier to see, not harder. This is not a complex financial conspiracy or a national security matter where classified material complicates disclosure. It is a small piece of vinyl in a public reflecting pool on the National Mall, photographed by multiple parties, in a case announced from a podium with television cameras rolling.

A 67-year-old man with no apparent history of anything like this was publicly branded a violent vandal by the top federal prosecutor in Washington. He now faces a felony count over damage his own timestamped photograph suggests he did not cause, and the object that would settle the question has been removed.

Judge Edelman has not yet ruled on the motion. Whatever he decides, the record already shows a prosecution that moved faster than its own evidence could support, and a government that let the proof disappear after being told in writing to keep it.

Donald Trump was booed at MetLife Stadium on Sunday when he walked onto the field for the World Cup trophy ceremony, capping a day in which a global crowd made its feelings about the American president unmistakably clear. Spain had just beaten Argentina 1-0, with Ferran Torres scoring off the bench against a ten-man Argentine side reduced by Enzo Fernández’s red card.

Trump emerged from the tunnel alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino, and the stadium answered with boos and jeers while he waved.

It was the second time in three hours. Trump was shown on the stadium’s video boards moments after Jennifer Hudson finished the national anthem, and the crowd turned on him immediately, with boos and whistles picked up both on the Fox broadcast feed and in fan video circulating from inside the stadium.

This was not a partisan American crowd. It was a capacity house of Spanish and Argentine supporters, plus fans from dozens of other countries, gathered for the final of the tournament the United States is hosting. Trump has spent eighteen months insisting that America is respected again. Given a stadium full of the actual world, he got his answer in real time.

He would not get off the stage

Trump was joined on the podium by Infantino, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Spain’s King Felipe VI. He placed the medals around the players’ necks himself, and while Infantino technically handed the trophy to Spain captain Rodri, Trump was the only one of the three host-nation leaders standing there when it happened.

Then he stayed. Rather than stepping back so the champions could have the moment they had spent a month earning, Trump remained planted at the front of the stage. The boos match the polling

Sunday’s reception was not an outlier or a New Jersey quirk. Across 36 countries surveyed by Pew Research Center this spring, a median of just 23 percent of adults expressed confidence in Trump to do the right thing in world affairs.

That is lower than confidence in Emmanuel Macron, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Xi Jinping, and Vladimir Putin. Among the leaders tested, only Benjamin Netanyahu scored worse.

The same research found favorable views of the United States falling in country after country, with double-digit drops over a single year in Indonesia, Italy, Nigeria, South Africa, South Korea, and Turkey.

The stadium on Sunday was simply the polling data with a sound system.

Bill Clinton skipped the 1994 final and sent Al Gore. Trump insisted on the podium, took the microphone moment away from the champions, and got booed for it by tens of thousands of people who traveled from around the world to be there. He wanted the whole planet watching. It was.

A U.S. service member was killed in northern Iraq on Saturday during what the military described as a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian attack drone. A second service member was wounded and is being treated for a minor injury.

The announcement came Sunday from U.S. Central Command, one day after the command confirmed that two American troops had been killed and a third was missing following an Iranian missile and drone attack on positions in Jordan.

CENTCOM also said Sunday that search teams had located unidentified remains at the site of the Jordan attack, and that an examination process to verify them is underway. The command is withholding the identities of the fallen and the missing until families are notified.

While the Pentagon was confirming the deaths in Jordan on Saturday, President Trump was at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. The Daily Beast reported that a scheduled White House press pool call was pushed back twice that afternoon, first from noon to 2 p.m. and then to 4 p.m., as the administration worked out how to respond.

Trump did not address the nation. He did not hold a briefing. His first public comment came only after a NewsNation correspondent called him directly on Saturday evening and asked.

The president told the network the deaths were a very sad thing and said the troops had died in service of their country. In the same conversation, he said he could not care less that Iran has abandoned the interim agreement his administration negotiated.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth offered his own tribute on Saturday, calling the fallen heroes and saying their sacrifice stiffens American resolve.

The optics did not go unnoticed. Critics circulated images of the president at the club as the casualty reports came in, with one widely followed commentator noting that two Americans were dead while Trump mingled with paying members of his resort. Congress Voted to End This War. Trump Ignored It.

None of this has been authorized by the legislative branch. In June, a bipartisan majority in the Senate voted 50 to 48 to direct the president to remove U.S. armed forces from hostilities with Iran, with Republicans Bill Cassidy, Susan Collins, Rand Paul and Lisa Murkowski joining every Democrat. The House had passed the same measure 215 to 208 earlier that month.

The resolution was never sent to the White House for signature and carries no binding force, a technicality the administration has leaned on hard. The White House has questioned the constitutionality of the War Powers Act itself and has never submitted a request for an authorization for the use of military force. Trump responded to the House vote by calling it meaningless and accusing four Republicans and every Democrat of being unpatriotic.

What Happens Next

The names of the fallen have not been released. A signature Tehran says is worth nothing

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, issued a written statement Saturday declaring that repeated American violations of the memorandum of understanding signed by both presidents had proven how worthless and unreliable the signature of the U.S. president is.

In the same statement, carried by Iranian state media, he described bullying, hegemonic ambition, and brutality as inseparable elements of the American way, and he did it while invoking a phrase Iranian leadership had shelved for the duration of the negotiations.

Khamenei called the United States “the Great Satan,” a term Axios reported he had not used since assuming office, marking a deliberate return to the revolutionary vocabulary of the 1980s.

The rhetorical rollback is not decoration. It is Tehran announcing that the diplomatic track President Donald Trump spent months advertising as a triumph is finished, and that the man who signed it is not considered a party worth negotiating with.

Two more American families got the call

Hours before the statement circulated, U.S. Central Command confirmed that two American service members in Jordan were killed and one remains missing after Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks on July 17. Four other troops were medically evacuated to hospitals in Jordan and have since been discharged, and CENTCOM said it would withhold the names of the dead until families were notified.

The deaths bring the American military toll in Trump’s Iran war to sixteen, according to reporting on the strike at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, a facility that hosts U.S. troops and fighter jets.

Hundreds more troops have been injured since fighting began on February 28. These are the first American deaths from direct Iranian fire since March, and they arrived during a week in which the administration insisted the situation was under control.

The deal Trump said would end the war

The interim agreement Khamenei now dismisses was signed roughly a month ago and was sold to the American public as the conflict’s off-ramp. It did not survive the summer.

Trump sent Congress a formal notification dated July 10 that hostilities had resumed, a letter the administration appears to treat as the start of a new 60-day window for military action without congressional approval, despite the ceasefire both governments signed on June 17.

Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, told state television that Washington had broken its commitments first and that Tehran is no longer implementing the deal.

Civilians are paying for the escalation

Iran’s Health Ministry reported Saturday that at least 50 people have been killed and more than 500 injured in American strikes this month. Among the targets was a desalination facility, and the resulting damage left 10,000 people without water.

Tehran has accused Washington of deliberately striking civilian infrastructure and committing war crimes, and the destroyed bridges, rail lines and water plants documented by Iranian state media give those accusations more traction than the White House would like.

There is also a plainly stated political clock behind the bombing. Trump is racing to bring down oil and gas prices ahead of the November midterms, and his escalation has so far failed to bring Iran back to the table at all.

Americans in uniform are being killed in service of a strategy whose most measurable deadline is an election.

Congress said stop. Republicans made sure it did not matter.

Two U.S. service members were killed and a third is missing in action after Iranian ballistic missiles and drones struck the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, U.S. Central Command announced Saturday.

The command said the deaths occurred Friday as American and partner forces worked to intercept the incoming barrage. Four other Americans were flown to Jordanian hospitals and have since been released, and personnel treated for minor injuries have gone back to work.

The deaths bring the number of U.S. service members killed in the conflict to 16. They are also the first American combat deaths since fighting resumed two weeks ago, when the president declared the ceasefire he negotiated to be finished and ordered the bombing to start again.

The Associated Press reported that these are the first U.S. deaths caused by direct Iranian fire since the opening days of the war. The Pentagon has not released the names of the dead.

What the military has confirmed

In a statement posted to social media, Central Command said the two Americans were killed in action while forces defended against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks, and that one service member remains missing. The command offered no further detail on the circumstances of the strike, the condition of the base, or the search for the missing American.

Muwaffaq Salti is not a minor outpost. The base is operated by the Royal Jordanian Air Force and has hosted American fighter aircraft for roughly a decade, and it has been openly identified by Iranian officials as a priority target.

Weeks before the strike, a member of Iran’s parliament publicly urged Jordanians to seize the base and take American personnel captive once missiles hit it. The troops stationed there were left in the path of a threat that was announced in advance.

A regional war that keeps widening

The strike on Jordan was one piece of a much larger overnight assault. Jordan’s armed forces said they shot down 10 Iranian missiles early Saturday, while Kuwait reported attacks on oil sector facilities that caused heavy damage and injuries, and Qatar’s foreign ministry condemned the renewed Iranian attacks on Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait as a violation of international law.

Iranian missiles have also hit civilian infrastructure across the Gulf, including power generation and water desalination plants that millions of people depend on.

More than 50,000 American military personnel are now deployed across the region, according to Central Command, and Friday’s U.S. strikes hit dozens of Iranian targets using fighter jets, drones, and warships.

Every one of those troops is exposed to the retaliation that follows. That is the arithmetic the administration has refused to explain to the public.

Congress already voted to end this

The service members killed in Jordan were deployed in a war that both chambers of Congress formally voted to stop. In June, the Senate approved a war powers resolution directing the president to remove U.S. forces from hostilities against Iran by a vote of 50 to 48, with four Republicans breaking with their party. The House had passed the same measure earlier in the month. It was the first time a war powers resolution cleared both chambers since the conflict began.

Trump ignored it. As legal scholars writing at Just Security noted this week, the president refused to withdraw forces after the vote, declared the ceasefire over, reinstated a naval blockade, and resumed bombing Iran.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, speaking on the Senate floor ahead of the vote, said Trump had promised maximum pressure and instead delivered chaos and cost to the American people, according to Al Jazeera.

Republican leaders in Congress have had months to force compliance with their own institution’s vote. They have used none of the tools available to them, no funding restrictions, no subpoenas, no binding legislation.

The GOP majority that describes itself as the party of the troops has chosen instead to let a president who lost the argument keep sending Americans into a war he cannot define or finish.

The public has never been with him

Voters figured this out long before Washington did. An Economist/YouGov survey released this week found 57 percent of voters call the war the wrong decision while 27 percent support it, a decline in support since April, with Trump’s overall approval at 37 percent against 59 percent disapproval.

Pew Research found in March that Americans broadly disapproved of the military action and of the president’s handling of the conflict, with roughly nine in ten Democrats opposed and even sizable gaps opening inside the Republican coalition, especially among younger Republicans.

Support for a war does not usually improve as the casualty lists grow, gas prices stay high, and the objective stays undefined. This administration has now spent five months betting that it will.

What accountability would look like

Two families will get a knock on the door this weekend, and a third is waiting to learn whether their service member is alive. They are owed more than a statement on social media and a round of thoughts and prayers from members of Congress who voted for the war powers resolution and then went quiet when it was defied.

Accountability starts with the questions nobody in the majority is asking out loud. What was the mission at Muwaffaq Salti, and why were American troops still concentrated at a base Iranian officials had publicly named as a target? What legal authority does the president claim for hostilities that Congress has explicitly declined to authorize? And what, precisely, would ending this war require, given that the ceasefire the president signed collapsed within weeks of the signing?

Until Republicans in Congress are willing to ask those questions of their own president, the answer to how this ends is simply more names the Pentagon has not yet released.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said Saturday that Donald Trump’s criticism of Canada’s response to the wildfires ripping through his province is, in his words, “absolutely unacceptable.”

Speaking to reporters as crews battled fires across northern Ontario, Ford told Reuters that his government is simply trying to get through the crisis, and that the roles could easily have been reversed. If the United States were burning, he said, “we’re going to be down there to support our neighbors.”

Ford, a Progressive Conservative who spent years cultivating Republican contacts in Washington, put the scale of the emergency at 655,000 hectares of forest, roughly 1.6 million acres, actively burning in Canada’s most populous province.

He said his heart breaks for residents who have lost homes, camps and businesses, and that he has instructed his ministers to treat the response as having no spending limit.

Trump Turns a Disaster Into a Tariff Threat

The premier was responding to President Donald Trump, who used Truth Social on Friday to accuse Canada of failing to maintain its forests and to declare that the United States is being invaded by air he called filthy and dangerous.

Trump went further, writing that the cost of the smoke amounts to willful negligence and must be added to the tariffs Canada already pays, a threat he did not explain in any detail. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Ford’s remarks.

Ford offered a pointed rejoinder. If the president genuinely wants Canadian forests thinned and cleared, the premier suggested, he could start by lifting American duties on Canadian softwood lumber, an industry whose economics determine how much low-value timber ever gets cut.

The Fire Data Does Not Support the Negligence Story

Federal officials reported 69 new fires overnight Saturday, bringing the national total to 955 active blazes. Yet the total area burned this season, close to 11,000 square miles, sits well below the five-year average, a figure hard to reconcile with claims of uniquely reckless Canadian management.

What has changed is the wind, which pushed smoke deep into American population centers and triggered air quality alerts and health warnings across the eastern half of the country.

Roughly 200 fires were burning in Ontario alone this week, and Ford said Friday that 81 of them remained out of control after several smaller blazes merged in Wabakimi Provincial Park and destroyed First Nations communities.

Ten communities had been evacuated by Friday morning. Federal Emergencies Minister Eleanor Olszewski said the Canadian Armed Forces would fly residents out of Fort Hope in the remote northwest, a region with few roads and heavy dependence on air travel.

Climate scientists have been blunt about the underlying cause. Rising temperatures dry out timber and lengthen the burning season, and the risk multiplies as more housing pushes into the boundary between forest and town. Those are the conditions the Trump administration has spent its term making worse, not better.

Congressional Republicans Push Sanctions

Trump joined a chorus that started earlier in the week on Capitol Hill. Four Michigan House Republicans, John James, Jack Bergman, John Moolenaar and Lisa McClain, sent Prime Minister Mark Carney a letter accusing Canada of offering excuses instead of results and warning that the United States would act on its own to protect its people if Ottawa did not manage its forests differently.

The lawmakers also told Carney that sovereignty comes with responsibility, language that reads very differently coming from an administration whose president has repeatedly floated annexing the country.

Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno, a close Trump ally, went further, announcing plans to introduce legislation sanctioning Canada and individual Canadian officials over the smoke. His office faulted Canada for insufficient forest thinning, fuel reduction and prescribed burns, prevention work that American agencies have themselves struggled to fund at scale.

Carney declined to engage the letter directly at a news conference in London, Ontario, but told reporters that fighting climate change is every country’s obligation, the United States included. He contrasted Canadian investment in clean energy with American hostility toward it, including the wind power this president has made a personal target.

Canada Has Been Sending Help North to South for Years

Lost in the Republican messaging is the record of who shows up. Ford noted Friday that Canada sent crews and equipment to California during last year’s fires and to Georgia after hurricane damage in 2024, and he suggested that politicians complaining from a distance could send support instead.

Days earlier, a 56-year-old Canadian pilot named Nicholas Dale was killed while fighting a fire in Colorado.

Conditions may ease shortly. Ontario Natural Resources Minister Mike Harris said fire activity slowed over the past day and that considerably more favorable weather is expected.

The political weather is less predictable. Trump has promised to raise the issue with Carney directly, and Moreno’s bill is due next week, which means an American ally fighting a disaster is likely to spend the coming days answering for the wind.

More than 100 million people across 18 states and the District of Columbia are under air quality alerts, with conditions rated “very unhealthy” and “hazardous” from northeast Minnesota to southeast Virginia. Detroit registered the worst air quality of any city on earth two days running.

Roughly 888 fires were burning across Canada as of Friday, most of them out of control, with nearly three million hectares already burned. Fires are also burning in northern Minnesota, a detail that complicates the theory that this is a foreign policy problem.

Fine particulate matter from wildfire smoke irritates eyes and airways in the short term and, with sustained exposure, is linked to heart failure, impaired brain function and premature death.

Officials in Chicago and Washington have told residents to stay inside or mask up. None of that is in dispute. What is in dispute is whether the correct federal response to a public health emergency is a tariff invoice sent to Ottawa.

He Defunded the Science, Then Complained About the Smoke

Here is the part that deserves to be said plainly. Shortly after Trump posted, The New York Times reported that his administration has spent recent months dismantling the government laboratories that research wildfire smoke and its effects on human health. This is not a new development that caught anyone off guard.

In June, NPR documented that the Seattle smoke lab was among 56 of 90 Forest Service research stations slated for closure under an agency reorganization, at the same moment the American West was heading into a brutal fire season.

The federal smoke maps that EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin pointed Americans toward on Friday were built in part with research funding from the very agency being hollowed out.

So the sequence runs like this: gut the wildfire research apparatus, gut the climate science that explains why fire seasons keep getting worse, then express fury that the smoke arrived anyway and demand that a neighboring country pay for it.

Scientists have been warning for years that human-driven climate change is producing more fire and more extreme weather. The Canadian government has said the same about its own worsening crisis.

The administration’s position is that the smoke is a Canadian maintenance failure, which is roughly like blaming your neighbor’s housekeeping for a hurricane.

Canada’s Answer

Canadian officials pushed back without much difficulty. Emergency Management Minister Eleanor Olszewski said in a statement Friday evening that Canada has invested $12 billion in forest sustainability and fire prevention since 2020, and pointed to the long history of the two countries fighting each other’s fires. Ontario Premier Doug Ford was blunter.

Speaking to reporters hours before Trump’s post, he said that if American politicians were going to be “chirping away,” they might instead send support and send help, noting that Canada has done exactly that for the United States.

He was not exaggerating. Canadian crews and equipment went south during the catastrophic Los Angeles fires in January 2025, when the emergency ran in the other direction. Nobody in Ottawa sent a bill.

Trump was not alone. Four Michigan Republicans, Reps. John James, Lisa McClain, John Moolenaar and Jack Bergman, sent Carney a letter this week complaining of “chronic under-investment in forest thinning, fuel reduction, and prescribed burns” and announcing that their patience had run out.

Prescribed burns and fuel reduction are, of course, exactly the kind of work informed by the federal fire science their party’s president is defunding.

What This Actually Is

Strip away the all-caps and the tariff math, and this is a president confronting a climate-driven disaster with the only two tools he reliably uses: blame a foreign country and threaten a tax that American businesses and consumers ultimately pay.

Tariffs do not clear the air. They do not staff fire lines, restore shuttered research stations or fund the smoke monitoring networks people are refreshing on their phones right now.

There is a version of this week in which a president mobilizes aircraft and crews, restores the fire science budget and treats a hemisphere-wide emergency as the shared problem it obviously is. Instead, Americans got a post about an invasion of dirty air, and a promise to make somebody else pay for it.

What Iran said

A top military adviser to Iran’s supreme leader warned Friday that Tehran will escalate to a phase of open-ended offensive operations if U.S. airstrikes continue for another two or three days. Major General Mohsen Rezaei, a former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, told the Iranian state news agency IRIB that Iran would stop confining itself to matching each American strike with an equivalent response, and that no political border would remain safe.

The threat landed as U.S. Central Command completed the seventh consecutive night of American bombing, a round that began at 3 p.m. Eastern on Friday and ended six and a half hours later. CENTCOM said the strikes hit surveillance sites, logistics infrastructure, underground weapons storage and maritime capabilities using fighter aircraft, drones and warships, and that U.S. forces are fully enforcing the naval blockade of Iranian ports.

Iranian state media reported that at least six bridges were struck in southern Iran, including one still under construction, killing at least eight people and injuring 20 more. The pattern of targets, bridges, rail junctions and power lines linking coastal cities, points to a campaign aimed at wresting control of the Strait of Hormuz away from Tehran by wrecking the infrastructure ordinary Iranians depend on.

Americans are already paying for it

Iran answered with missiles and drones aimed at U.S. installations across the region. Multiple U.S. officials told CBS News that several American service members were wounded when Iranian fire hit at least two bases in Jordan this week. Neither Washington nor Amman has disclosed how many troops were hurt or how badly. Jordan’s armed forces said air defenses intercepted 10 incoming missiles early Saturday. In Kuwait, a power and desalination plant burned after being hit. In Qatar, a child was wounded by shrapnel from an interception.

The official toll of Trump’s war now stands at 14 U.S. service members killed, including a Navy pilot who died in a crash over the Arabian Sea this month, with more than 400 wounded since fighting began on February 28. The president spent Thursday night telling the country the United States is winning and that Americans will see the fruits of that labor very shortly.

Congress said no. Trump did it anyway.

The war Trump is escalating is one that both chambers of Congress have already voted to stop. The House passed a war powers resolution 215 to 208 in early June, and the Senate approved it 50 to 48 on June 23, with Republicans Bill Cassidy, Susan Collins, Rand Paul and Lisa Murkowski joining Democrats. It was the first time in history that both chambers directed a president to withdraw forces under the War Powers Act.

Trump’s response was to treat the vote as a nuisance. After the June ceasefire collapsed, the White House sent lawmakers a letter dated July 10 declaring hostilities resumed, a maneuver the administration reads as restarting the 60-day clock that lets a president wage war without congressional sign-off. Sen. Adam Schiff, who filed a fresh war powers resolution with Sens. Tim Kaine, Andy Kim, Jeff Merkley and Chris Van Hollen, said the claim to another 60 days has no foundation in law, and noted that Americans were promised for months the war was over before getting more strikes, another blockade and turmoil that will push prices higher.

Republicans are the reason it continues

Congressional Republicans hold the majorities that could force this president to come ask permission, and with a handful of exceptions they have declined to use them. GOP leadership has not held public hearings with administration officials on a war that has killed American troops, wounded hundreds more and dragged into its fifth month with no defined objective. Having voted once that further war is illegal without authorization, the Republican majority has done nothing to make that finding stick.

Democrats have been left improvising leverage. This week Senate Democrats brought the annual defense policy bill to a halt, refusing to advance it unless Republicans accept legal limits on the war. Kaine told reporters he sees no point in additional war powers votes, since Congress has already said definitively that the war is illegal. The obstacle is not the tally. It is a governing party that will not enforce its own vote against a president of its own party.

Rezaei’s warning is a threat from an authoritarian government with a long record of violence against its own people and its neighbors, and it should be read that way. It is also a description of where an unauthorized war of choice tends to go when nobody with the constitutional power to stop it is willing to.

President Donald Trump’s social media company has found a novel way to convert the presidency into cash: it plans to start charging Wall Street firms for faster access to posts from Truth Social’s most influential accounts, including Trump’s own. Trump Media & Technology Group announced the product on Thursday, and the mechanics of it should alarm anyone who believes markets are supposed to run on a level playing field.

The service, branded “Truth API,” is scheduled to go live on August 1. It delivers real-time posts from the platform’s top 10 trending accounts, a roster that, alongside the president, reportedly includes the White House account, FBI Director Kash Patel, deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino, and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Subscribers receive those posts within milliseconds, pushed out faster than an ordinary notification would ever reach a regular user’s phone.

That speed is the entire point. Trump has spent his second term using Truth Social as his primary channel for announcing major policy, tariffs, moves against the Federal Reserve, decisions on Iran. Those posts routinely jolt stocks, oil, and currencies within seconds.

His “Liberation Day” tariff announcements and his posts on trade restrictions with China sent markets swinging in real time. When a single sentence from the president can move billions of dollars, the firms that read it first win, and everyone reading it a beat later loses.

The company is candid about this. The feed is designed for the organizations most punished by even a fractional delay, high-frequency and algorithmic trading shops whose automated systems can buy or sell before a human has finished reading a headline.

“Markets already move on Truth Social posts,” interim chief executive Kevin McGurn said in a statement, pitching the feed as a “high-margin, recurring revenue stream.” Trump Media says it has already signed up customers, including financial news organizations and high-frequency trading firms, ahead of the launch.

Here is what makes this different from an ordinary data product. The president sets the policy. He announces the policy on a platform he effectively controls. And the company selling early access to those announcements is one in which he holds a roughly 41 percent stake. Every dollar Wall Street pays for a head start on his words flows, in part, back to him. It is a closed loop of policy, publication, and profit, with the president at every node.

Democrats moved quickly to name what they were looking at. Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut called the arrangement “flagrant corruption, trading access to the White House for Trump’s self-enrichment.” Rep. Jason Crow of Colorado said the president was simply making more money off “insider trading.”

And California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a potential 2028 contender, wrote bluntly that Trump “is now LITERALLY selling early access to market-moving information,” demanding to know where the investigation was.

The people with no seat at this table are the ones who always end up paying. The retiree whose 401(k) rides the market. The teacher whose pension is invested in the same funds.

The small investor who checks their phone and finds the trade already made, the price already moved, the profit already booked by someone who wired in enough money to buy the fast lane.

Selling preferential access to information that the president himself generates is not a gray area. It is the office being run as a business, and the flag being sold as a product.

The Truth API launches in two weeks. The only remaining question is whether anyone with subpoena power decides to look.
