The Treasury Department has a new product to sell you: a $1 commemorative gold coin bearing the face of Donald Trump and, without a hint of irony, the word “Liberty.”
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent unveiled the coin Wednesday morning, pitching it as a tribute to America’s 250th anniversary and “the enduring legacy of liberty.”
The Commission of Fine Arts cleared the way for the coin back in March. An earlier design showed Trump with his fists planted on a desk; the version Bessent shared opts for a simple portrait on one side and the presidential seal’s insignia on the other.
Strip away the ceremony and what remains is this: a sitting president putting his own face on American money to celebrate a revolution fought so that no man’s face would ever rule this country.
The Vanity Tour, Funded by You
The coin is not a one-off. It is the latest stop on what has become a systematic campaign to attach Trump’s name, face, and signature to government documents, federal buildings, battleships, and more since he returned to office in January.
The Treasury Department announced earlier this year that new currency would carry the president’s signature. Bessent himself teased a redesigned $100 bank note by sharing a screenshot of Trump’s own Truth Social post, promising “unprecedented economic growth” and “lasting dollar dominance” under the president’s leadership.
Then came the limited edition “Patriot Passport”, printed to mark the semiquincentennial. The sample Trump shared shows him standing with his fists on the Resolute Desk, the text of the Declaration of Independence rendered behind him — a document written to reject exactly this kind of self-glorification.
Kings put their faces on coins and passports. American presidents, historically, have not. George Washington understood the danger of that imagery so well that he refused the trappings of monarchy outright. Two hundred and fifty years later, the anniversary of that refusal is being commemorated with a gold coin bearing one living man’s face.
The Kennedy Center Rebuke
The self-branding campaign has not gone unchallenged. The administration’s push to bolt Trump’s name onto the Kennedy Center drew legal scrutiny almost immediately, and last month a federal judge ordered the name removed from the performing arts center’s facade.
Trump appealed. He lost. And soon after, photos surfaced online of crews prying the letters off the building — a removal delayed only by weather. A court had to force the President of the United States to take his name off a building that was never his.
“Beautifying” a Capital That’s Falling Apart
All of this has been marketed under a single banner: beautifying the nation’s capital. So it is worth checking what that beautification actually looks like on the ground.
The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, the backdrop of the March on Washington, one of the most photographed sights in America, turned green with algae amid the administration’s controversial renovation work. The Kennedy Center, the very building the administration fought in court to brand, has seen its own renovation troubles pile up. And at the White House, the president’s ballroom project keeps growing more expensive, with rising costs landing on taxpayers.
This is the record behind the gold coin: an algae-choked national monument, a court-ordered name removal, and a ballroom bill footed by the public. That is not beautification. It is decoration — the difference between fixing what is broken and gilding your own image while the actual country deteriorates beneath the shine.
Liberty for Whom?
Which brings us back to the word stamped on that coin.
“Liberty” is a strange choice of branding from an administration that has presided over the steady erosion of it. Women have watched reproductive rights dismantled state by state with the White House’s enthusiastic blessing. Immigrants who came to this country legally — who followed every rule and filed every form — have been detained and deported as though their status meant nothing. The rights being celebrated on the coin are the same rights being stripped from the people expected to carry it in their pockets.
The Founders this administration claims to honor built a government specifically designed to prevent any one man from becoming its face. The 250th anniversary now being hijacked for a personal branding campaign exists because they succeeded.
A gold coin cannot buy back a reflecting pool’s dignity, a court’s respect, or a citizen’s rights. The next time someone holds one up and points to the word “Liberty,” the only honest response is a question: liberty for whom?
