Donald Trump fired White House press secretary Katie Zacharia on Friday, ending one of the shortest and most humiliating tenures in the history of the job. Advisers to the president confirmed Trump had fired her after five days of chaos, while a senior White House official softened the news by saying she was “transitioning out” of the role.

Zacharia held exactly one press briefing. It lasted under 14 minutes, she took three questions from three handpicked conservative outlets, and she referred to her own husband as “my president” before correcting herself. By the time she walked out of the briefing room, her own colleagues were already tearing her apart in private.

Trump spent Friday morning laying the groundwork for her exit, telling reporters she had been treated “very unfairly” and suggested she should reconsider the role because she had been brutalized by the media. By the afternoon, she was out.

Trump’s Own Staff Turned On Her Before She Left The Podium

The most damning reviews of Zacharia’s debut did not come from Democrats or the press. They came from inside the building. A wave of leaked internal texts obtained by the Daily Mail showed Trump’s own senior staff trashing her in real time, with a senior administration official saying flatly that she “could barely read.”

A senior communications official called the briefing “terrible on so many different levels.” Another official called it “embarrassing.” A Republican communications strategist responded with a single dumpster fire emoji.

More than half a dozen Trump officials told the Daily Mail they believe Zacharia was sent to the podium with essentially no preparation, and some suggested she was set up to fail. Zacharia herself later said her briefing materials arrived the night before and her final notes were not finished until about two hours before the cameras rolled.

The Daily Mail also reported that Trump made the hire on the spur of the moment with no real vetting. Zacharia, a former Fox News and One America News commentator who also worked for Truth Social, replaced Karoline Leavitt after Leavitt stepped away from the job following the birth of her second child.

The Law Career That Never Existed

For years, Zacharia presented herself to the public as a lawyer, and when Trump announced her appointment, he called her an attorney. The morning of her first briefing, independent journalist Judd Legum reported there was no evidence she had ever been admitted to practice law in any state.

Asked directly where she passed the bar exam, Zacharia told reporters she passed it “when I moved to China.” China does not allow American citizens to take its bar exam, and no foreign license would authorize her to practice law in the United States.

The Wall Street Journal then reported that Zacharia sat for the California bar exam in 2011 after graduating from Pepperdine and did not pass it. In an interview with Sean Hannity, she admitted she never took the exam a second time, anywhere, ever.

A Bar Complaint In Her First Week On The Job

On Wednesday, the watchdog group Campaign for Accountability filed a bar complaint against her with the State Bar of California, asking it to investigate whether she held herself out as entitled to practice law without a license. Under California law, that is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

The complaint cites at least 18 television appearances between February 2025 and October 2026 in which Zacharia allegedly described herself as a lawyer, and it asks the bar to refer the matter to prosecutors if it finds a violation. The State Bar says it has no record of Zacharia, or her former name Kate Sharon Black, ever being licensed in California. She has not been charged with any crime.

What This Firing Says About Trump’s White House

The ugliest assessment in the leaked texts was not about Zacharia at all. A senior Trump administration official told the Daily Mail that her hiring and that briefing show this White House is collapsing now that it is facing real pressure. That is Trump’s own staff describing Trump’s own operation, less than three weeks before the midterms.

This is also the second high profile departure Zacharia was tied to in a single week. Her one piece of actual news at that briefing was confirming the White House had asked Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign from her post as ambassador to Greece, meaning Zacharia announced someone else’s ouster days before her own.

Trump did not vet his press secretary. He checked one thing, whether she would defend him on television, and the result was a spokesperson who could not get through 14 minutes at the podium, a credentials scandal, a bar complaint, and a firing, all inside a single week. The people saying this White House has no idea what it is doing are the people who work there.
