On the night of July 6, Kevin McCarthy sat down with guest host Charlie Hurt on Jesse Watters Primetime and delivered a line so confident it deserves to be preserved.
Democrats in Maine were in crisis. Politico had just reported that a woman who dated Senate candidate Graham Platner accused him of sexual assault. Platner denied it. Hurt asked McCarthy whether Maine voters should hold the Democratic Party responsible.
McCarthy said they should. Then he made it a contrast.
Republicans, he explained, know how to handle this. When the party has a very bad candidate and finds out about it, Republicans don’t vote for that person. They walk away. And as proof, McCarthy offered a single name: when Matt Gaetz came forward, we got rid of him.
Bill Kristol responded on social media while suggesting that McCarthy ought to meet Donald Trump.
Jessica Tarlov, on Fox’s own air, said it couldn’t be real life. Both reactions were correct, but both were too gentle, because what happened over the following twenty-seven days turned McCarthy’s boast into something closer to a controlled experiment.
Both parties got handed the same test. Only one of them passed it.
How Democrats Reacted To Grant Platner Is A Major Contrast
Platner announced he was ending his campaign on Wednesday, July 8, two days after McCarthy’s appearance. He filed the formal withdrawal paperwork with Maine’s Division of Elections that Friday, three days before the deadline that would have locked him onto the November ballot.
He did not leave because he wanted to. He left because there was nowhere to stand.
The endorsers went first. Ro Khanna, Elizabeth Warren, Ruben Gallego, and the Pod Save America hosts had all backed Platner through an earlier round of controversies, and all of them withdrew their support within roughly 48 hours of the allegation surfacing. The Maine Democratic Party called on him to withdraw. Chuck Schumer and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee told him publicly that the national party would move on without him. When Platner’s team tried to influence who might replace him, the state party’s executive director went on video to say his campaign had no role in the process whatsoever.
The state party then did something it had never done before. With no procedure in its bylaws for replacing a statewide nominee, Maine Democrats built one from nothing in under three weeks. County-level caucuses elected delegates. Those delegates met in Bangor on July 25. Troy Jackson, a fifth-generation logger and former president of the Maine Senate, won the nomination with 566 of 571 votes and will face Susan Collins in November.
Platner had won the June primary with real grassroots energy, and forcing him out cost the party a nominee it had just chosen, but Democrats have often chosen to walk away from nominees that don’t match the party’s values. The seat is one of a handful that will decide Senate control, and Democrats burned three weeks of a general election campaign on internal chaos rather than on Collins.
They did it anyway. That is the entire point. Walking away is only a principle if it costs you something.
What The Republicans Did, Twenty-Seven Days Later
On Sunday, August 2, reporters aboard Air Force One asked Trump about the domestic violence allegations against Ohio Congressman Max Miller.
Miller’s ex-wife, Emily Moreno, is the daughter of Republican Senator Bernie Moreno. In court filings arising from their divorce and custody dispute, she has accused Miller of hitting and threatening her. Miller denies the allegations and has sued her for defamation. Prosecutors declined to bring charges, citing insufficient admissible evidence.
These are not the first accusations against him. Multiple sources told Politico years ago that Miller’s relationship with former Trump press secretary Stephanie Grisham ended after he pushed her against a wall in his Washington apartment and slapped her in the face. Grisham wrote about it publicly at the time, in a column noting that Trump knew what he knew and still endorsed her ex’s congressional bid.
Trump’s answer on Sunday was that he had just learned about it, that these are currently accusations, and that he would look into it.
He had endorsed Miller in May, in all capital letters, promising that Miller would not let anyone down. Miller and Emily Moreno were married at Mar-a-Lago in a ceremony that included a toast from Trump himself.
Hours earlier that same Sunday, Miller had gone live on X for twenty-five minutes to announce he is not leaving the race and to characterize his ex-wife as mentally unwell and dishonest. His former father-in-law, a sitting Republican senator, responded by calling him unfit for office.
There is no comparable pressure campaign on the Republican side. There is no equivalent of the DSCC statement, no equivalent of the state party demanding an exit, no meaningful wave of Republican endorsers pulling back. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine called the accusations troubling and said the district’s voters would weigh the facts. The calls for resignation have come from Democrats. Miller remains the Republican nominee in a district he won two years ago with barely fifty-one percent of the vote.
And… About That Whole Matt Gaetz Controversy
McCarthy’s proof of Republican integrity does not withstand scrutiny of the record.
The House Ethics Committee announced its investigation into Gaetz in April 2021. That same week, McCarthy appeared on Fox and said Gaetz would be removed from the Judiciary Committee if the allegations proved true. Gaetz sat on the Judiciary Committee for the next three and a half years, until the day he resigned from Congress.
Republicans nominated him again in 2022 and again in 2024. When McCarthy personally spent three million dollars backing a primary challenger against him in August 2024, Republican voters returned Gaetz to Washington anyway.
Then came the part that required people to go on the record.
Gaetz resigned on November 14, 2024, days before the Ethics Committee was scheduled to vote on releasing its report, immediately after Trump announced him as the nominee for Attorney General. On November 20, committee Republicans deadlocked the release along party lines.
Speaker Mike Johnson publicly urged the committee to keep the report buried, arguing that publishing findings about a former member would set a terrible precedent, even though the committee had done exactly that on multiple prior occasions.
Sean Casten filed a privileged resolution to force a floor vote. Johnson simply let it expire over the Thanksgiving recess.
Casten refiled. Steve Cohen filed a companion resolution requiring the records be preserved as well as released. On December 5, 2024, House Republicans referred both back to committee rather than vote on the merits. The tallies were 206 to 198 and 204 to 198. Tom McClintock of California was the only Republican in the entire conference to break ranks, quoting Brandeis on sunlight and disinfectant.
Two floor votes. One defector out of 220.
The report came out on December 23, over the objections of the committee’s own Republican chairman, and only after Gaetz had already left Congress, sued to block its publication, and withdrawn from the Attorney General nomination on his own initiative.
Gaetz was not gotten rid of. He quit, was promptly nominated to run the Justice Department, and his former colleagues spent a month voting to keep the public from learning why he needed to quit in the first place.
The Standard Exists. It Just Isn’t Theirs
The most useful thing about McCarthy’s July 6 remarks is that he was not lying about what a party should do. He described the standard accurately. A party that finds out its candidate is credibly accused of serious misconduct should stop defending that candidate, even when it hurts, even when the seat matters, even when the base is angry about it.
He simply attributed that standard to the wrong party, on the wrong week, while watching the other one meet it in real time.
Maine Democrats lost their nominee, absorbed weeks of infighting and public embarrassment, invented a replacement process from scratch, and put a new name on the ballot with three weeks to spare.
Twenty-seven days later, the Republican answer to the same question was that so far it’s accusations, and we’ll be looking into it.
That is not a party that walks away. That is a party that has learned it never has to.
